As school comes to an end...I am sad and excieted at the same time. But the hard part has also come. Like in the first half of the class, for the final project we must to a book set. This is where each student reviews a set of books and explain why the chose it and how they will use it. My topic is Jewish American Literature. I started looking for my books a week ago...knowning I would have trouble and did not want to wait until the end. BUT...I did not know how hard it would be.
I chose Jewish Lit because I have always found the religion interesting. I took a Holocaust class when I was in high school and found the topic to be both interesting and terrifying at the same time. I decided that I wanted to ease students into the history of Judaism. After a week of only finding Holocaust related books...I gave up. I was sure that, that was it. So I brought "Night". Which is an amazing book but for the high end of the educational spectrum. I still feel I could use parts of it is not the whole thing. After a few days went by...it was like lighting hit. AMAZON! Not only was I able to find tons of books on their about Jewish literature...they were cheap too!
While for some it may be a set back to have to buy more book on a college students salary...but I figure I will need these books anyways...so why not. At least I know now that there will be some good books in my classroom...even if it is not a lot.

Hi Becka,
I read your blog and I was very interested to see that you are writing about Jewish American Literature. After reading Confessions of a Closet Catholic, I became very interested in this form of diversity becuase before coming to college I had no experiences or knowledge of the Jewish religion or culture. Hopefully you will be able to find a lot of great books that are informative, high quality and authentic books for insiders and outsiders. I am also excited to see that you have alrady chosen Night. I read that book my sophmore year of college and it was amazing! One of my roommates was Jewish and she went to an Jewish High School where this book was a part of the curriculum due to its high quality. This book was also on Oprah's Book Club a few years ago. This could be a great book for children and adults to read to get a different perspective on the Holocaust that insiders and outsiders alike will appreciate and become more informed. Good luck with your project!!!! -AZ
